Josh Askew, Under-Secretary General for Business
The Under-Secretary Generals for Business are responsible for managing Oxford Global’s social media accounts, aiming to attract new delegates and keep current ones engaged and informed about the latest conference updates. You can see their recent progress in revealing the committees and the secretariat team on Oxford Global’s Instagram @oxford.global. Additionally, the under-secretary generals for business seek sponsorships and partnerships with businesses to facilitate the running of the conference and enhance the delegate experience through potential discounts from local businesses. They are also tasked with managing external staff for the conference and designing the training for volunteers.
Interview:
Hi! I’m Josh Askew, one of the Under-Secretary Generals for Business. I am studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics and have just finished my first year at Trinity College, Oxford. My role involves establishing partnerships with businesses and assisting in the management of social media.
What has been your MUN journey?
I had very limited MUN experience before coming to Oxford, having only participated in a short 1-day session with some local schools. Even from this brief experience, I knew it was something I really enjoyed, so I jumped at the opportunity to work with Oxford Global. After chairing at both the November and February conferences, I joined the secretariat as a USG for Business. Since then, I have also had the opportunity to chair with Oxford Global in Shanghai and have greatly appreciated the opportunity to work with such an amazing organisation.
Do you have a favourite committee? Why?
My favourite committee is ECOFIN (the Economic and Financial Affairs Council). Through my A-Levels and degree, I have developed a strong interest in all things economics. Applying this interest within the context of global politics combines my passion for both politics and economics in a way that perfectly suits my PPE degree. ECOFIN is also a committee with significant potential for impact, given the substantial influence economic policies can have on our everyday lives.
What are you most excited about the conference?
I’m most excited to see the fruition of our efforts over the past few months as we approach the conference. Watching delegates enjoy themselves, get involved, learn new things, and meet new people makes all the time and effort worth it. The opportunity to create lifelong memories and spark new interests is truly rewarding, and I can’t wait to see it pay off.
