What to Look Forward to at OxfordMUN 2020

From the chance to influence actual UN policy to the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation, here is a sneak peek at the exciting things we have in store for OxfordMUN 2020.

The UNHCR Refugee Challenge

This year the UNHCR is launching the 'MUN Refugee Challenge', which asks Model United Nations delegates worldwide to debate the major issues related to forced displacement. We are excited to announce that OxfordMUN 2020 is taking part! The resolutions that emerge from debate by the UNHCR committee will be put before a UNHCR jury, with awards being announced in 2021 and the best ideas being shared with actual UN policymakers. We can't wait to hear the creative solutions that our delegates come up with in order to tackle one of the most pressing issues facing the world today.

Our First-Ever Press Committee

At OxfordMUN 2020, we are launching our first-ever Press Committee. We hope that this brand new committee will give delegates of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to learn more about news reporting while fine-tuning their writing skills. This is a fantastic chance to experience MUN through a different lens and learn more about the structure and functioning of the United Nations. We have been working really hard to put this committee together and cannot wait to welcome our Press Committee delegates for the inaugural session!

European Council

This committee is an exciting addition to OxfordMUN 2020 as it is not actually part of the UN, but the EU! Composed of 27 member states, the European Council sets the agenda, political direction, and policies of the European Union. This is a great opportunity for delegates to experience a different format of debate and learn more about the inner-workings of the European Union.

COP26

Whilst the COP26 2020 UN Climate Change Conference has been postponed this year due to COVID-19, COP26 at OxfordMUN is going ahead! Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing the international community and millions of young people across the world have mobilised against government inaction and unsustainable development. In this committee, delegates will be given the chance to defend their government's policies on climate change and work together with other nations and blocs to carve out a more sustainable future for mankind.

Crisis Committee

Instead of representing countries in this year's crisis committee, delegates will be asked to take up the roles of individual characters on the Board of Directors of a large corporation. The members of this committee will tackle various crises as they unfold, taking into account all of the different stakeholders in the business, from CEO to PR and Ethics officers to members of the worker's unions. This will be a great chance for delegates to step outside of their comfort zone and learn more about the functioning of large-scale businesses.

European Court of Human Rights

In this exciting committee, delegates will act as legal representatives on the European Court of Human Rights. Using moot court protocol, delegates will be able to practice their legal skills and learn more about the European Court of Human Rights. This committee is the perfect preparation for a delegate who is considering reading law at university or wishes to be a lawyer in the future.

We can’t wait to welcome you to our conference and we hope you’re as excited as we are for OxfordMUN2020!
