Director applications for August 2019 are now OPEN
What is WEMUN Expo?
WE Model United Nations Expo (WEMUN Expo) was established in 2007 as one of the first secondary school Model United Nations conferences in China. It has quickly become internationally recognised, each year attracting over 1000 delegates from more than 15 countries, and has now grown to become the largest annual Model UN conference in Asia. The conference takes place at the beginning of August, and is unique in that it has brought together members of other internationally-recognised Model UN organisations as staff members.
Boston University (BeanMUN)
University of Chicago (MUNUC)
University of Pennsylvania (ILMUNC)
Cornell University (CMUNC)
McGill University (SSUNS)
Oxford Global joined forces with WEMUN Expo in 2013, and became an instant favourite with Expo delegates and staffers alike. The Oxford team has since doubled in size, and many of our Directors have remained involved in the organisation's other projects after travelling to China. We look forward to returning to Expo with a new team this summer!
Directors work closely with high school students from all over China as well as university students from various international institutions. After preparing a background guide that covers two current world topics, you will travel to China to guide the delegates in your committee through their collaborative experience at the conference, working to address the challenges presented by issues such as renewable energy, food shortages, access to education, and more. Through the course of the week, the impact of these debates on delegates’ personal development will be palpable. In addition to your work during the committee sessions, evening gatherings and sightseeing trips with your fellow directors will provide a close-knit social environment that will lead to lasting friendships. Current first-year undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Oxford are eligible to apply for director positions.
FOR STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
Delegate participants debate current issues and work toward global solutions with fellow committee members. This allows them to dig deeper into the substance of the committees and to further develop their skills of public speaking, negotiation, and diplomacy. Furthermore, delegates will have the opportunity to gain insight into different complementary topics during an afternoon of workshops. At the Global Village and Delegate Gala, participants will be immersed in the cultural diversity of the conference by participating in a performance, sampling the traditional cuisines of different nations, or simply getting to know the other participants in a casual environment.
Round-trip flights of up to £750, a visa subsidy of £100 and accommodation during the trip are included. Directors will be expected to cover other costs.
Flexibility with flight bookings allow you to travel around China before/after the programme; you are free to book your own flights (to be reimbursed) as is convenient.
Great opportunity for sharing perspectives: 30 directors from various top-tier universities attend each year, along with 1000 participants; previous trips have given rise to friendships and ongoing collaborations.
Expo dates and location:
Early August (TBC), with a pre-arranged tour before or after.
The conference has previously been held at a conference centre near Beijing, though other cities may be considered as a new location for this year.
OXFORD GLOBAL FEE:
Oxford Global is a start-up that was founded in Oxford by current students and alumni. We charge a £95 fee for all of our international programmes in order to cover some of our annual costs. You are expected to make this payment within one week of your acceptance to confirm your place. In exchange, we will provide up to £750 for flights and also cover your accommodation costs during the trip. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any refunds on this fee after you have confirmed your position on the team. Oxford Global grants financial aid to cover the entire fee in all cases of demonstrated need. You can register your interest in financial aid directly on the apply page and doing so will not affect the outcome of your application.
